Can sex in advertising backfire?

We all know that the average size of woman is much larger then what we see in our advertising and on television. Here are the facts about the average size of the American woman . It's really interesting to note that the average model size is quite different, here look at these stats: average size for super models . There is such a big discrepancy here, it's almost sad to see this! No wonder our young girls feel so much pressure. No wonder some older women loose all their self esteem and feel hopeless and pretty much give up by giving in to fast food urges and eating unhealthy amounts of food.

Now this brings up my next thought, why does sex in advertising not backfire? Don't people protest what they see? When you are a size 14 and you see a size 2 model selling you shoes, with extra long shiny smooth legs when you have cankles and heir stubble? Why would buy these shoes? isn't that like worshipping what you see?

I really wonder about the psychology behind all of this because women,en are not dumb enough to think that if they buy those shoes they will be sexy like the model. I wonder about the half clothes ads in some of the really risque ads, do their sales drop because larger women feel bad about the ad? It rubs in their face what they are not. they are not skinny, and by seeing this, it will wreck their self esteem, by re-in forcing what they should look like.

Another possible though is that the woman's boyfriend or husband sees these pictures constantly on brings home this ideal of what she should look like. When a man watches porn and sees perfectly shaven naughty bits and big breast implants, then he looks at his girl who is hairy, small and oh-so average, how does not really like it as much, therefore his sex drive might go down. Or, is it the opposite if that  does he see porn stars, does he get really horny then go home and take all of his sexual urges out on her? Does he pretend he is with the model or with his girlfriend/wife?

This is such a big gray area, there are do many ways that this can go. The effects of nudity ripple down really far into many facets of relationships and life. Can it all be good? There is no way that these affects can be good. Somewhere along the line, someone somewhere muts be protesting all this nudity and too much sexiness and boycott certain products.

Do agencies think of these things when they decide on their advertising strategy?

Look at Reitmans, they go for the average women, pretty, not to skinny, not too fat. I bet their ads pay off big time, sales must be so high because they make the average women feel sexy, not bad about the skin they are in.

maybe the Retiman's ads will cayuse a push towards better bodies models in advertising. maybe it all starts with the winner of Top; model who is a full-figured women. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a new revolution to have real women model and sell us our shoes and perfume because we do not like to feel fat and ugly. Now that's diet food for thought.
